Where is the data about us?
Social networking services allow us to chat (that is, to post messages and get instant responses), or put information about ourselves on a site, or share photos, videos, music and more.
To protect ourselves from other Internet users, most social networking can be configured so that we can decide what to share with whom. However, many people have unwittingly shared data about themselves, including their home addresses and their holiday dates!:
- by not understanding how the options work (try it out with a friend, if you're not sure);
- by not thinking about who will receive the message, see the photo or read the page when they post information;
- by not reading what the options are and not making a conscious decision on how they want their pages to be set up.
