Protect yourself from yourself (to protect yourself from malware)
- Make sure that you install any legitimate updates you receive or are advised of.
- Keep your computer protection package (anti-virus) subscription up to date so that you receive updates.
- Only open an email if you know where it comes from. In particular, be careful of email attachments. Jokes are a good way to spread viruses.
- Do not turn off your computer protection package because the warning messages are annoying. This is particularly true when you install new software.
- If your browser flashes up a warning message, read it and decide what to do. There is a reason for the warning.
- Make sure that the security settings on your browser are on medium or higher so that you are protected when browsing the Internet.
- You wouldn't walk down just any old, dark alley so don't just click on any old link without asking yourself what it is. Most links are safe, some are not.
